Thirsty Thursdays: Jessie Young

What is one thing people should know about you?:

I’m happiest when I’m in the mountains, on top of a summit taking in the view of the world around me. Sometimes when I’m racing I catch myself looking around and I have to remind myself “this is a race – pick up the pace!”

What are your favorite mantras? Close the gap! Or if I happen to be ahead, grow the gap. I also always find myself counting out the seconds of intervals.

Last song you caught yourself singing along to? Gotta have faith

Why the Summit Endurance Academy for coaching?

With this being another World Championship year I wanted to take my training up a notch to see how well I can compete in Europe. It has been so fun working with Joe and integrating new workouts into my program to keep things interesting and continue to get faster!

What are three things you always pack on any trip?

  • Running shoes – you never know!
  • Leuko Tape!!! I use this tape to prevent blisters and keep my feet happy.
  • A book.

Favorite superhero? My brother’s Bat Man costume that he wore when he was 6 has become my go to Halloween outfit – does that count?

Are you more of a hunter or a gatherer?

I grew up in a family of hunters and after reading Michael Pollens books about our food system I decided to give hunting a try. Turns out it’s really quite hard to go slow enough to see an animal before it sees you. So I guess training is paying off for racing but isn’t so helpful for spotting elk!

Name three weakness/guilty pleasures? Chocolate, sleeping in on the weekends, and Bonnie’s pancakes on Aspen Mountain!

What inspires you? Being in the mountains and my appreciation for being able to explore new places and cultures.

What do you do to relax? Relax? I’m not sure what you’re talking about…is that like sleep?

What is your spirit animal? A bighorn sheep.

What are your nutrition principles? Real food, Sunday night dinners at my parents, and chocolate.

Who is your hero? My mom and women around the world.

If you had the chance to talk to your hero this instant, what would you ask him/her? I talk to her almost everyday and usually I get in trouble because I am falling behind in my wedding planning responsibilities or I am asking her about cooking or how to get a stain out.

What question should I have asked? If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go? My answer right now would be The Himalayas.
